John is a graduate of Georgia Tech and a lifelong Fredericksburg area resident. Prior to retirement in 2001 he was Corporate Compliance Officer for MediCorp Health System, and a previously held the office of Controller for Mary Washington Hospital (subsidiary of MediCorp Health System) for over twenty years. He was a fellow in the Healthcare Financial Management Association and past president of its Virginia Chapter.

He is currently a Board member and Treasurer of the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad Foundation, a member emeritus of the Riverside Foundation for the Performing Arts, and a Board member and Secretary of the Beaverdam Heritage Days Foundation. He is a former Board member and Treasurer of Fredericksburg Historic Foundation and former member of the Vestry and Treasurer of Trinity Episcopal Church.
